Digital Desk: Amid the ongoing political unrest in Bangladesh, a senior Awami League leader,
School teachers' indefinite protest regarding a pay hike and annual increment assurance by the Meghalaya state government.
Digital Desk: Under the banner of The Federation of All School Teachers of Meghalaya (FASTOM), school teachers' decided on Wednesday to continue their indefinite protest in front of the secretariat until the state government is ready to implement their demands.
The decision was made after teachers expressed dissatisfaction with the assurances given by Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui during a meeting today.
According to FASTOM spokesperson Mayborn Lyngdoh, Rymbui has assured the delegation that the government is considering the teachers' demands.
The education minister expressed his views saying "that the government needed more time due to a technical glitch, but we requested that they take us into consideration so that we can assist in resolving the matter."
Over 8,000 ad hoc teachers have demanded a pay hike of Rs 18,000 salary and a 5% annual raise.
Lyngdoh stated that the teachers have decided to continue their protest until the government agrees to meet their demands. "We will not leave until and unless the government gives us the order," he added.
In addition to the protest, The Thma U Rangli Juki (TUR) and Workers Power of Meghalaya (WPM) expressed solidarity with the struggling school teachers who have been forced to camp out in front of the secretariat after being betrayed by the (Meghalaya Democratic Alliance) MDA government, which consists of the NPP, UDP, PDF, HSPDP, five expelled Congress MLAs, and some independents.
TUR claimed in a press statement that cabinet meetings had arrived and moved with no resolution to the legitimate demands of school teachers.
TUR stated that in the 50th year of Meghalaya's statehood, it is shameful that the state consistently ranks last in all developmental indicators in India, whether it is health, education, or food security, and that this has resulted in a rapid decline in the state's developmental aspects.
