The community has faced obstacles in purchasing land due to the similarity in names and titles with Bengali Muslims.
Digital Desk: The members of the All Assam Goriya National Council held a press conference Guwahati Press Club to discuss the government failures regarding the Goriya issue. Mainul Islam, as President of the Council, along with members including Mir Ali and Iqbal Hussain to attended the conference.
1.The Assam government, through its cabinet decision, instructed the Secretary of the Minority Development Department to establish a district-level committee establishment directive on 22nd February 2024. However, despite the formation of committees in many districts, the government has failed to implement a proper, publicized social survey (SOP). Government inaction towards solving the Goriya community issues has emerged as evidence of their lack of attention to this matter.
2.The Goriya community has been deprived of government land benefits in all three phases of the Bondsundhara scheme since the Assam government recognized the Goriya together with other communities as native ethnic groups through its Gazette Notification This is due to the similarity of names and titles between the Goriya community and Bengali Muslims, resulting in discrimination when it comes to securing land benefits.
3.In September, the Assam Chief Minister announced that the government would establish new legislation about land exchanges depending on religious ties. The Goriya community now encounters challenges during land acquisitions since names and titles match those of Bengali Muslims.
The Assam government recognized the Goriya community as indigenous but government departments fail to allow these benefits through their denial of the rights granted to indigenous groups.
The Goriya community needs the government to publicly define its position regarding indigenous rights so the community can obtain the rights and privileges of indigenous status.
