Protest Erupts In Dibrugarh Over Thai Company's Entry Into The Piggery Sector

The farmers expressed their concerns and said that the entry of CP Group in Assam's market would lower prices, and lakhs of farmers would face a financial crisis.

Digital Desk: Hundreds of people gathered on Monday at Chowkidingee of Dibrugarh to protest against the potential entry of Thai agricultural company Charoen Pokphand Group into Assam's pig farming sector.

The farmers expressed their concerns and said that the entry of CP Group in Assam's market would lower prices, and lakhs of farmers would face a financial crisis.

They further said that the government should focus on strengthening local farmers instead of foreign companies.

According to reports, the Assam government has invited the CP Group to the Advantage Assam 2.0 summit, which led to the farmers' protest on Monday in Dibrugarh.

The CP Group is the world's largest feed and shrimp producer. It also ranks among the top three producers of poultry and pork.

Another pig farmer said that they are fighting for the rights of more than ten lakh small-scale pig farmers in Assam. Expressing his concerns, he said that if the company enters into the state, it would destroy all of those farmers' livelihoods.
