The tea industry in Barak Valley struggling with severe economic downturn

The Barak Valley Tea Industry, which has historically faced several traditional issues, is now facing a severe economic crisis.

Digital Desk: The Barak Valley Tea Industry, which has historically faced many traditional issues, is now facing a severe economic crisis due to prolonged recessionary conditions. 

The Indian Tea Association has expressed grave concern about the state of the tea industry in the Barak Valley region, which the recent floods have exacerbated. 

Due to continuous rainfall since the first week of May, the entire Barak Valley has been inundated with severe floods. 

All of the rivers, which are reportedly flowing far above the danger level, have reportedly caused erosion in several areas and submerged several towns in that region, including Silchar, the main hub of activity.

The road connecting the Barak Valley and the Brahmaputra Valley has been cut off. 

It showed a significant impact on the supply of several critical inputs and the dispatch of finished teas. Road communication to several tea estates from the region's major towns has been disrupted. 

The inability of tea estates to ship tea is causing serious financial problems. The bad weather is also causing power outages and telecommunications instability. There is widespread concern about the scarcity of essential items such as POL, coal, etc.

 If the current weather pattern continues, food shortage in the coming days can't be handled.

The association and its Surma Valley Branch are actively coordinating with the administration to deal with the situation.

According to a press release, the government of Assam has been asked to take appropriate measures to protect life and livelihood in that region.
