Third wave of flood hits Assam this season, thousands affected
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reports that the most recent wave of flooding, which began last week, has affected 69,750 people in 110 villages across five districts.

Digital Desk: Assam has experienced its third wave of flood this season as a result of days of nonstop rain in several areas of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reports that the most recent wave of flooding, which began last week, has affected 69,750 people in 110 villages across five districts.

The authority said in a statement that "in light of the flood scenario in the state, ASDMA together with all the stakeholders have scaled up the response and recovery assistance to the severely impacted regions."

No fatalities have been reported as a result of the flooding, however, the ASDMA said that 3,021 hectares of cropland in the districts of Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Lakhimpur, and Nagaon have been submerged.

With 38,774 people impacted, including 7,885 children, and 2,838 hectares of cropland submerged, Dhemaji is the worst-affected district. In Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, and Dibrugarh, there have been twenty aid distribution centres set up.

In addition to floods, erosion brought on by rising river levels has also been documented in seven Assamese districts.

Officials from the Dibrugarh district claim that since October 8, the Brahmaputra's banks in the Philonuguri Grant area, adjacent to Dibrugarh Town, have been continuously eroding.

To stop flood waters from breaching and entering Dibrugarh town, the water resources department erected an embankment and moved the existing dyke, according to an official.

According to the ASDMA, there have also been reports of erosion along riverbanks in the districts of Biswanath, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Morigaon, Sonitpur, and Tinsukia. The Brahmaputra is reportedly flowing above the danger mark at Nematighat.
