Digital desk: Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) star batsman Virat Kohli became the first Indian player and the third overall to achieve a 100th T20 fifty-plus score. He created this milestone in RCB's Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Punjab Kings (PBKS). The 35-year-old, coming off a dismal match against Chennai Super Kings, was back to his vintage best in this encounter. With two sixes and eleven fours, he scored 77 runs in 49 balls. His strike rate was over 157 when he scored his runs.
With eight centuries and 92 fifties, Virat achieved 12,092 runs at an average of 41.26 in 378 games. His greatest rating is 122*. In the T20 format, Virat is India's leading T20 run-getter and overall sixth.
Above Virat in terms of most fifty-plus scores are the great Australian David Warner (109 fifty-plus scores including eight centuries) and the West Indies batting great Chris Gayle (110 fifty-plus scores including 22 centuries).
When the Punjab Kings (PBKS) took the field for the match, they noticed their batters were getting starts, but none of them were able to turn it into something significant. Despite some solid knocks from captain Shikhar Dhawan (45 in 37 balls, five fours and a six), Jitesh Sharma (27 in 20 balls, two sixes and a four), and Sam Curran (23 in 17 balls), PBKS could only produce 176/6 in 20 overs on a batting-friendly Chinnaswammy wicket.
RCB kept losing wickets frequently in their chase of 177, but Virat (77 in 49 balls, with 11 fours and 2 sixes) kept the ship afloat at the other end. After his dismissal, things were difficult for RCB, but with four balls remaining, Dinesh Karthik (28* in 10 balls, three fours, and two sixes) and Mahipal Lomror (17* in eight balls, two fours and a six) helped the side win by four wickets.
For PBKS, the two best bowlers were Kagiso Rabada (2/23) and Harpreet Brar (2/13).
