Duleep Trophy 2022: West Zone team to be led by Ajinkya Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane will play his first competitive game after suffering a hamstring injury while playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL.

Digital Desk: Ajinkya Rahane will captain the West Zone team in the Duleep Trophy, which will be held next month. Sarfraz Khan, a domestic run machine, has been selected to play for India A in a series against New Zealand A.

Shreyas Iyer and Shardul Thakur have been named to the West Zone squad for the Duleep Trophy by the zonal selection committee, which is chaired by former India bowler Salil Ankola.

The West Zone team has nine players from Mumbai. Mumbai has advanced to the Ranji Trophy finals, where they were defeated by Madhya Pradesh.

Rahane will play his first competitive game since suffering a hamstring injury while playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. The seasoned batsman will need some big runs to cement his place in India's Test line-up.

It has been learned that Iyer will not play for India A against New Zealand A in Bangalore next month. Iyer has been placed on the Indian team's reserve list for the Asia Cup.

Mumbai's top-order batsmen, Prithvi Shaw, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shams Mulani, and Suvad Parkar, were chosen by the zonal selection committee. Hardik Tamore, the wicketkeeper-batsman who scored a century in the Ranji Trophy semi-finals, also made the cut.

Gujarat's wicketkeeper-batsman Het Patel and all-rounder Chintan Gaja were also chosen by the selectors. Chirag Jani of Saurashtra, left-arm spinner Dharmendra Jadeja, and left-arm pacer Jaydev Unadkat have been included in the squad.

Atit Seth of Baroda and Rahul Tripathi of Maharashtra have both been included in the West Zone squad. Tripathi was selected for India's trip to Zimbabwe but couldn't play.

Sarfaraz Khan of Mumbai will be part of India A squad that will face the New Zealand A team. As a result, his name was not included in the West Zone squad. Khan has been a domestic run machine for the past two seasons.

This Ranji Trophy season, he scored over 900 runs. Gujarat batsman Priyank Panchal and bowler Arzan Nagwaswalla will join Khan in India's A team.
