Changes in eligibility criteria for BE and BTech admissions: mathematics and physics no longer compu

According to the new norms released by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) students aspiring to get admissions into engineering no longer need to compulsorily study mathematics and physics in the 12^th standard.

 This change in the eligibility criteria for the BE and BTech admissions have been stated in the AICTE approval process handbook 2021-22.

The handbook also stated that unreserved category students must obtain at least 45% in the qualifying exam while the reserved category students must obtain at least 40%.

The Council further listed subjects from which the students need to study any 3 in their 12^th standard. The list included the following subjects: physics, mathematics, chemistry, computer sciences, electronics and information technology, biology, informatics practices, biotechnology, technical vocational subject, agriculture, engineering, graphics, business studies and entrepreneurship.

However, with Mathematics being the core subject for engineering, this change has met with its fair share of criticism as to the stress for the students as well as the quality of engineers that will be produced.

The Council has clarified that bridge courses including mathematics, physics, engineering, drawing, etc will be provided by the universities to students of diverse background to cope up with the rigours of the syllabus of engineering..

While chemistry was removed as a mandatory requirement in 2010, up until now, only students who had opted for mathematics and physics could apply for engineering admissions. The recent change has opened up the BE and BTech admissions to students of different background

Anil Sahasrabudhe, Council Chairperson stated that the change has been made keeping in line with the multi-disciplinary approach of the new National Education Policy.
