Digital Desk: Former Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was shot at in western Japan on Friday, Japan-based media house NHK reports said. Reportedly, a suspect had been arrested and was being interrogated. As per the Japanese media, the 67-year-old Shinzo Abe is not showing any vital signs after being brought to the hospital.
"Abe Shinzo, a former Japanese prime minister, collapsed during a speech in the western Japanese city of Nara. Initial reports indicate that he might have been injured. A gunshot-like sound was reported on the scene, and an on-site NHK reporter spotted Abe bleeding," it said in an alert.
The former Japanese PM is unconscious and believed to be in cardiac respiratory arrest, a Japanese media outlet Kyodo stated.
The incident happened on Friday at about 11.30 am (8.29 am IST). According to the report, Abe was delivering a speech on a downtown street when he was attacked.
A gunshot was heard at the time, and a male suspect was arrested on the spot, according to NHK. During Abe's address, an NHK reporter reported hearing two consecutive bangs on the scene.
Abe, who comes from a political family, made headlines as the longest-serving Prime Minister in terms of consecutive days in office until announcing his decision to leave down due to a recurrence of a severe ailment. He had a close relationship with India and had been there in 2006, 2014, 2015, and 2017.
