Digital Desk: Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra Patel stated that the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has accepted to host the state's 36th National Games. The prestigious games, slated to take place between September 27 and October 10, 2022, will be held in the state for the first time.
Harsh Sanghvi, the Minister of State for Sports, praised the decision and said that Gujarat is known for setting records and benchmarks. Gujarat will break another record by hosting the 36th National Games in under three months, with more than 34 sports represented in six different cities throughout the state.
Due to the spread of Covid-19, the 36th National Games scheduled to be held in Goa in May 2020 have been indefinitely postponed. "The various sporting activities would be spread across the state, covering six towns of Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, and Bhavnagar. This will guarantee greater community involvement in sports," Principal secretary, sports Ashwini Kumar said in a press statement.
Gujarat will improve and utilize its current infrastructure to the fullest extent possible to host these games in accordance with the Olympic movement. This way, the facilities built and improved will be used regularly by the state's athletes.
Secretary-general, IOA, Rajeev Mehta, expressed his joy over Gujarat's willingness to host the National Games. He stated that the National Sports Federations (NSFs) and IOA were consulted during the assessment of the state's infrastructure before the details of the sports were decided upon. He appreciated the state government's aggressive efforts to host the Games.
