Digital Desk: The Central government's 'Agneepath' recruiting scheme, which allows Indian youth to enlist in the Armed Forces, is in the middle of a storm, with protests rising across the country.

Protests in Bihar over the Agneepath row

Protests in Bihar continued for the second day in a row on Friday, with protestors blocking train traffic in various districts of the state. Angry youths in the Begusarai district blocked the Rajbara Gumti road. As agitated protestors chose to vent their concerns by sitting on the railway lines, train movement was disrupted in many places. Roads were also obstructed in several locations. Moreover, tyres were also burned on the train track during the demonstration.

Reportedly, activists attacked Deputy chief minister Renu Devi's home in Bettiah, Bihar, during a protest against the Agneepath Scheme. "Our Bettiah home was broken into. We were severely harmed. Renu Devi is currently in Patna," said her son.

Students caused a stir at the district's Sahebpurkamal train station by burning and pelting stones. A similar uproar erupted in the Lakhisarai district. Many protestors marched throughout the district against the central government's scheme. During the rally, anti-Central government slogans were also shouted. "They physically restrained me from making a video and even took my phone. Approximately 4-5 compartments are affected. Passengers disembarked and proceeded on their own," a police officer said.

Unrest in Uttar Pradesh's Balia over the Agnipath row

A similar anti-scheme protest took place in Balia, Uttar Pradesh. In protest against the Agnipath proposal, a large crowd assembled at Ballia Railway Station. "Since the morning, forces have been deployed at the station. Although a few protestors arrived, they were stopped from destroying most of the public property. They tried stone-pelting. Action against them was initiated, "Saumya Agarwal, the Ballia District Magistrate, stated.

Hundreds of aspirants interrupted rail and road traffic on Thursday, prompting police to use tear gas to disperse them. Aspirants held protests against the scheme on Wednesday in Muzaffarpur, Begusarai, and Buxar districts, interrupting road and rail traffic. The first batch of 'Agneepath' will be ready by July 2023, with recruitment starting in the next 90 days.

Protesters set fire to a train at the railway station in Secunderabad

In Telangana, agitators protesting the Agneepath scheme destroyed the Secunderabad railway station and set fire to a train. At Secunderabad station, stalls were vandalised, a train was set ablaze, and its windows were shattered. The fire on a train set ablaze at Secunderabad railway station was doused out.

What is the Agneepath scheme all about?

The government has introduced the Agnipath Scheme to modernise the Armed Forces' recruitment procedure. The Centre has decided to change the upper age limit for recruiting Agniveers in response to the opposition's criticism of the new military recruitment plan. On June 16, 2022, the Centre announced that it had extended the Agniveer upper age limit to 23 years from 21 years for recruitments through Agneepath Scheme. The Union Cabinet approved an engaging program for Indian youth to enlist in the Armed Forces on June 14. The scheme is named  Agneepath, and the chosen youth will be referred to as Agniveers. Agneepath is a four-year programme that allows patriotic and motivated young people to serve in the Armed Forces.
