Digital Desk: Actor Michael Gambon, known for his role as Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series, passes away at 82. The actor's death was confirmed by his publicist.

The actor's publicist on Thursday announced the death of veteran actor Michael Gambon, who was well-known for playing Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in six of the eight "Harry Potter" movies. He was 82.

According to a press release from his publicist, he passed away after "a bout of pneumonia."

"We are heartbroken to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon. With his wife Anne and son Fergus by his bedside, beloved husband and father Michael passed away quietly in the hospital," his family said.

Gambon's voice, with its rich, drawling tones, made him instantly recognized in each part he played throughout a more than five-decade career. Following the passing of his predecessor, Richard Harris, in 2002, he was chosen to portray the beloved Dumbledore.
