Digital Desk: Avatar: The Way of Water, James Cameron's epic, has crossed Rs 300 crore in nett collections in India, a milestone only a few Indian films have achieved this year. Globally, the film is continuing its strong run in its third weekend, putting it on track to become the year's highest-grossing film. Currently, that tag resides with Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick.
Avatar: The Way of Water recently became the fastest film to reach $1 billion internationally this year, surpassing the record in less than two weeks. Maverick took about six weeks to complete, and Jurassic World: Dominion took about four months. As per trade tracker Sacnilk, its India collection is better than any other Indian release in the last three weeks. The film earned Rs 10.50 crore on Friday, taking its India net total to Rs 304 crore. Given its pace, it is likely to break Avengers: Endgame's record for the highest-grossing overseas film in India. The MCU film grossed Rs 373 crore in India.
The Way of Water is also making money on a global scale. According to a Variety report, as of Wednesday, the film had earned $337.8 million in the US and Canada and $762.8 million in the international market. According to other trade reports, the picture has now added a few million more to its kitty, reaching close to $1.2 billion worldwide. This indicates that it will probably surpass Top Gun: Maverick's $1.5 billion lifetime global gross in the coming days.
According to industry insiders, the film's global earnings are expected to exceed $2 billion before the end of its run. This would also ensure its entry on the list of the ten most successful movies ever. It's fascinating to note that its predecessor, Avatar, which earned $2.9 billion worldwide, is at the top of this list.
