Digital Desk: A special NDPS Act court in
Mumbai rejected the
Narcotics Control Bureau's (NCB) plea to cancel the bail of comedian Bharti Singh and her husband Harsh Limbhachiya in a drug case.
The plea was turned down last week by V V Patil, a special judge for cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, claiming a lack of merit, but the whole verdict became accessible on Tuesday. The couple was taken into custody in November 2020 after 86.5 grams of cannabis (ganja) was reportedly found in their home. They were released on bail with a Rs. 15,000 bond from a magistrate's court.
Later that year in December, the NCB moved the special NDPS court for bail cancellation, claiming that the prosecution had not been given any hearing. However, the court stated in its judgment last week that there were no charges that the couple interfered with the functioning of justice or breached their bail conditions.
Therefore, the judge stated that there were no grounds for bail cancellation. According to officials, Bharti Singh's name was mentioned during a drug supplier's interrogation when the NCB was looking into alleged drug use in Bollywood following the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput in June 2020.
