Bollywood Actress Sonakshi Sinha bestowed with PETA 'Person of the Year' Honor
Sonakshi is closely involved in animal welfare activities and frequently campaigns for improved animal protection laws...

Digital Desk: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India has chosen Sonakshi Sinha as Person of the Year 2022'. The animal rights non-profit organisation placed the title on her to appreciate the actor's activities which helped "save the lives of animals slaughtered for fashion and her passionate advocacy for dogs and cats in need".

The title came to her after she campaigned against leather for PETA India which highlighted the message that "more than 1.4 billion cows, sheep, goats, dogs, cats, and other animals are killed in awful ways each year to be transformed into leather accessories that no one wants".

Sonakshi in a campaign poster, posed with a stern expression on her face, holding a bag that appeared to bleed. 'Did your bag bleed?' was written on top, followed by 'Choose leather-free at the bottom.

"Fashion should be enjoyable, not gruesome. I'm hoping my new @petaindia campaign conveys that idea. Please choose an animal-friendly design since it's not just a humanitarian thing to do... it's also hella cool!" she captioned the Instagram Photo post.

According to a press release from PETA India, "she actively encourages shoppers to embrace animal- and Earth-friendly vegan leather, such as that made from pineapple leaves, cork, fruit waste, and mushrooms, and her history of speaking out for animals includes calling for stronger animal protection legislation," making her the obvious choice.

Sonakshi is actively interested in animal welfare initiatives and constantly talks out the need for tougher animal protection regulations.

Notably, she also starred in a pro-adoption campaign to lobby for desi dogs' rights on International Homeless Animals Day, and signed a letter advocating for the rescue of an elephant exploited for rides near Jaipur.

Alia Bhatt was selected PETA Person of the Year in 2021.

Other past recipients of PETA India's Person of the Year Award include:

Former Supreme Court Justice KS Panicker Radhakrishnan, cricketer Virat Kohli, comedian Kapil Sharma, and actresses John Abraham, Anushka Sharma, Sunny Leone, R Madhavan, Jacqueline Fernandez, Hema Malini, and Sonam Kapoor Ahuja are among those on the list.
