Digital Desk: The Kolkata International Film Festival commenced with the presence of Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, Sourav Ganguly, Arijit Singh, and many more celebrities.
At the event, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee demanded that cinema star Amitabh Bachchan be awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour, for his contributions to Indian and global cinema. Big B also spoke at the event, covering a wide range of issues.

During her speech, the chief minister urged that actor Amitabh Bachchan be awarded the Bharat Ratna for his great contribution to Indian and global cinema.

Amitabh Bachchan, who addressed the 28th edition of KIFF, termed the present type of historical films as couched in fictionalised jingoism while tracing the history of Indian cinema. "There have been numerous shifts in movie content since early times, from mythological films and socialist cinema to the arrival of the furious young man to the current kind of historicals, couched in fictionalised jingoism, combined with moral policing," observed the octogenarian superstar of Indian cinema.
"The range has kept viewers contemplating on the politics and social concerns of the times," he continued. The actor further stated that "issues about civil liberties and freedom are being highlighted" by Indian cinema even now.
An exhibition on the 80-year-old iconic actor's life and works will be shown at KIFF, with the inaugural film being Abhimaan.
Meanwhile, the 28th edition of the Kolkata International Film Festival, organised by the Information and Cultural Affairs Department of the Government of West Bengal, is set to take place in Kolkata from December 15 to December 22.
