Digital Desk: The concert business in India has grown to a new high in the year 2024 with some of the biggest artists in the world performing in India, starting from Bryan Adams, then Dua Lipa, Maroon 5, Punjabi singer Diljit Dosanjh, and Punjabi singer Karan Aujla. It is shaping up for a more fervent music celebration in 2025 with Coldplay, Green Day, and Ed Sheeran lined up to perform. However, concertgoers are beginning to loudly complain of poor management for such events regardless of the high ticket prices.
From issues of crowd management and unhygienic washrooms to out-of-control mosh pits and poor stage sound, the Indian concert experience has steadily turned into the former over the latter. The social media platforms are filled with horror stories that make what should be a fun event into a nightmare.
This is not a movement that even the artists themselves are protected from the anarchy of. Famous Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh complained during his concert held at Chandigarh on 14 December that adequate staging arrangements were missing, which hampered crowd participation. Though he later tried to withdraw his comment, what he said exposed the pathetic state of concert infrastructure in India.
No doubt, the live entertainment business is growing at an unprecedented rate. An annual review from the Indian ticket booking platform BookMyShow stated that there were “30,687 live events in 319 cities” in BookMyShow in 2024; that is 18% higher than the previous year. Yet, the basic infrastructure required for this sheer app development has not been developed at the same pace.
Alas, as India gets a cosmos of the worldwide creative individuals, the risks are larger than ever. If development of new plans, safety provisions, and services are not made immediately, then this country stands the chance of deteriorating its image in international touring circuits of concerts. It’s time to hit the right note and make sure consumers get the value addition they are paying for.
