While the numbers are lower than those of some recent Marvel blockbusters, they are higher than those of many recent Bollywood films such as Doctor G and Goodbye.
Digital Desk: Black Adam, starring Dwayne Johnson, was released in India on Thursday, one day before its global release on October 21. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the film opened to a respectable box office performance. While the numbers are lower than those of some recent Marvel blockbusters, they are higher than those of many recent Bollywood films such as Doctor G and Goodbye.
According to sources, Black Adam grossed Rs. 6 crore in India on Thursday across all languages. The figure is significantly higher than Ayushmann Khurrana's Doctor G (3.8 crore) and Amitabh Bachchan's Goodbye (less than 1 crore). It is also more than the previous big DC release, The Batman, which earned 5.75 crore on its first day in India in March.
However, the numbers pale in comparison to the recent success of some Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which was released in May, grossed Rs. 27.50 crore on its first day in India. Spider-Man: No Way Home broke the pandemic-era record for Hollywood films in India, grossing 32 crore on its first day. According to industry insiders, Marvel is more popular in India than DC. Furthermore, Black Adam is a relatively unknown figure in the country.
The origin story of the DC Comics antihero Teth Adam is told in Black Adam. In the comics, he has been a foe of both Shazam and Superman. The film takes place in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The film is directed by Jaume Collet-Serra and stars Aldis Hodge, Noah Centino, Sarah Shahi, and Pierce Brosnan. Several DCEU actors make cameo appearances in the film, including Djimon Hounsou as Shazam, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, and Henry Cavill as Superman.
