Digital Desk: With 843 fresh Covid cases, India recorded its highest single-day tally of infections in over four months on Saturday. According to data from the Union Health Ministry, the number of active cases has risen to 5,389. With the new cases, the country's caseload has risen to 4.46 crore (4,46,94,349). The death toll increased to 5,30,799, with four fatalities, according to data updated at 8 a.m. While Jharkhand and Maharashtra each recorded one death, Kerala reconciled two.

At 5,839, active cases now account for 0.01 percent of overall infections. According to the health ministry's website, the national Covi-19 recovery percentage was 98.8 percent.

The total number of people who have recovered from the disease has risen to 4,41,58,161, with a case fatality rate of 1.19 percent. According to the ministry's website, 220.64 crore doses of Covid-19 vaccine have been administered as part of the countrywide vaccination drive. The Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry wrote to the state governments of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka on Thursday, urging them to implement a five-pronged strategy of test, monitor, treat, and vaccinations as Covid-19 cases increased in these states.

India has witnessed a significant decline in the number of Covid-19 cases during the past few months. However, a rise in cases has been seen in recent weeks, particularly in certain areas of the country, with a total of 2,082 cases reported in the week ending March 8, 2023, rising to 3,264 cases in the week concluding March 15, said Union Home Ministry's letter.

According to the Union Health Ministry, there are a few states reporting a higher number of cases, suggesting a possible localized spread of infection, and there is a need to follow a risk assessment-based strategy to prevent and contain the infection without losing the gains made so far in the fight against the pandemic. In the nationwide Covid vaccination drive, 220,64,80,756 doses were administered so far.
