A Race Against Time: Live Donor Heart Flown To Save A Women’s Life

Mr SJ Sawant, a 43 years old man from Nagpur, lost his life to a brain stroke…

Digital Desk: A living donor heart was  shipped over 1,067 km from Nagpur to New Delhi and successfully transplanted in a 59-year-old woman with end-stage heart failure. Traveling only 20 kilometers through a green corridor in 27 minutes, the heart arrived at Fortis Escorts Heart Institute and saved the patient’s life.

The recipient was suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy, a disease of the electrical short circuit, which led to weakened heart muscles and very poor heart function. As mentioned earlier, her condition became aggravated after being treated with a pacemaker some years back, and became confined to her bed. A heart transplant was the only solution for her.

Mr. SJ Sawant, a 43-year-old man from Nagpur, lost his life to a brain stroke. His
family agreed to do an organ donation, and this made the transplant possible. The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO) is responsible for the coordination of the transportation of the heart from the donor to the recipient within six hours of harvesting the organ.

The heart was retrieved from Kingsway Hospital, Nagpur, at 12:53 am on December 9. It was airlifted at 12 am and departed at 12:20 am and arrived at Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport at 03:19 am. From there, the Delhi Traffic Police facilitated a green corridor, ensuring the heart reached Fortis Escorts Heart Institute by 3:57 am.

A team of special surgeons was headed by Dr. Ritwick Raj Bhuyan and Dr. Milind Hote to carry out the delicate transplant surgery. “Timing is everything,” Dr. Bhuyan reiterated. “This organ has to be transplanted within six hours of having been removed from the donor’s body for the organ to be useful. This operation called for great integration of medical departments and organizations.”

Dr. Hote highlighted the significance of organ donation: It is something that brings about change, and this change is life-changing. This type of transplant proved to be effective, thanks to the cooperation of various centers and the world’s best surgical skills.

The patient had been waiting for heart transplantation for 11 years. He said her health had worsened, and she was often too exhausted to leave her bed. Today she is okay and has been offered another lease of life, all thanks to modern technologies that are used in treatment and, of course, the kindhearted donor family.

This operation underlines the significance of the organ transplant and uses the words of modern medicine—every life. It acts as an alert of how people’s cooperation as well as people’s kindness can make the impossible possible.
