Golaghat/Jorhat : With death toll rising to 157 and many others admitted in critical condition, the Hooch tragedy is putting the state government in troubled waters as the opposition is raising doubt of competence of ruling on the BJP led Assam Government.
Police raided a godown of one Lalchand Agarwal in Golaghat on Sunday and recovered jaggery, alum and urea, the main ingredients used in making the illicit liquor.
Additional director general of police Mukesh Agarwal informed that over 20 people in connection with the state’s worst hooch tragedy.
Golaghat Excise department superintendent Shantanu Hazarika said that the poor quality jaggery meant for cattle feed, is routed for making hooch. The Golaghat district administration is providing free relief materials like dal, rice, salt and flattened rice to the families hit by the hooch tragedy.
Doctors from Assam Medical College and Tezpur Medical College were rushed to Jorhat and Golaghat to assist in the treatment of the affected people.
After the hooch tragedy in Golaghat and Jorhat districts, the Excise department launched a crackdown against illicit country liquor trade which has allegedly been running in the state.
