Digital Desk: NR Narayana Murthy, the renowned co-founder of Infosys, has yet again made headlines, but this time not for his infamous "70 hours a week" work ethic mantra. The tech mogul recently gifted shares worth over ₹240 crore to his four-month-old grandson, Ekagrah Rohan Murty, propelling him into the ranks of Indian millionaires.

According to an exchange filing, Ekagrah now possesses 15,00,000 shares of Infosys, translating to a 0.04 percent stake in the company. This substantial transaction occurred "off-market," as disclosed in the filing.

This act of generosity has slightly diminished Mr. Murthy's stake in the company, reducing it from 0.40 percent to 0.36 percent, amounting to 1.51 crore shares.

Ekagrah, born in November 2023 to Rohan Murthy and Aparna Krishnan, marks the third grandchild of Narayan and Sudha Murty, adding to the family's legacy. His name, inspired by the character Arjun from the Mahabharata, embodies the essence of unwavering focus and determination, denoted by the Sanskrit term 'Ekagrah.'

Infosys, initially founded with a modest investment of ₹10,000 in 1981, has burgeoned into India's second-largest tech company, symbolizing the success achieved through perseverance and innovation.

Sudha Murty, a notable author and philanthropist, significantly contributed to Infosys's early days by bootstraping the company with her savings. After dedicating over 25 years to leading the Infosys Foundation, she retired in December 2021 but continues her philanthropic efforts through her family's foundation and now serves as a member of the Rajya Sabha.

Mr. Murthy's past remarks advocating for a rigorous work ethic have sparked debates, with some endorsing his views while others caution against potential burnout. Despite facing criticism, Mr. Murthy stands by his statement, highlighting support from various quarters, including "good people" and NRIs.

NR Narayana Murthy's recent gesture not only signifies his commitment to family but also underscores the enduring legacy of Infosys and the values it upholds in India's corporate landscape.
