Digital Desk: Students who have cleared 10+2 with physics, chemistry, and mathematics as their core will still have the option to pursue National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate) or NEET (UG). The most recent rules issued by the National Medical Commission (NMC) mandate that students take and pass an additional biology or biotechnology exam at the 10+2 level from any recognised board.

Before, applicants for the MBBS programme had to complete two years of continuous study in English, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology in Classes 11 and 12. This was mandated by the Regulations on Graduate Medical Education, 1997. All normal schools were required to finish this study; neither private candidates nor open schools were acceptable. In 2018, the Delhi High Court invalidated these clauses.
The eligibility requirement for taking admission in an undergraduate medical course in a Foreign Medical Institution Regulations, 2002, and the Screening Test Regulation, 2002, were affected by this decision for candidates seeking admission to graduate/primary medical courses in foreign institutions. Applicants risked being disqualified from the NEET-UG Test and having their requests for eligibility certificates rejected.
The Graduate Medical Education Regulations, 2023 were introduced by the National Medical Commission in response, and they went into effect on June 2, 2023. Candidates who pass 10+2 with physics, chemistry, biology/biotechnology, and English are now eligible for NEET-UG, under Regulation 11(b). The prior restrictions were retrospectively revoked by this.
The New Education Policy's flexibility led the NMC to reconsider the prior strategy during a meeting on June 14, 2023. In order to continue being eligible for NEET-UG and the Eligibility Certificate, students may now pursue the necessary topics as extra coursework after earning their Class 12 diploma from an accredited school.
Applications for eligibility certificates that were previously denied by applicants are covered by this ruling retrospectively. Candidates may, however, appear in NEET-UG 2024 if they become eligible after this public notification. MCI and NMC will drop any court actions they have filed, and candidates who have filed lawsuits against MCI and NMC in the meantime will be able to quickly resolve this revised stance.
