No more Periodic Table, Democracy topic in NCERT Textbooks For Class 10; Here's why

Digital Desk: The periodic table, democracy, and energy sources will no longer be taught in government-issued textbooks to Class 10 students. Complete chapters on the subjects have been removed as part of a "rationalisation" aimed at reducing the "burden on students."

The evolution theory deletion from the Class 10 curriculum caused major criticism earlier this year. Further changes have been uncovered in newly released textbooks by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), including a chapter on the periodic table.

Chapters on environmental sustainability and energy sources are among the topics skipped from the science textbook. Following the most recent revision, whole chapters on democracy, challenges to democracy, and political parties were also eliminated for Class 10 students.

According to the NCERT, it was critical to minimise the burden on pupils in light of the coronavirus pandemic. NCERT cites "difficulty level, overlapping content, and content irrelevant in the present context" as grounds for removing these chapters from the curriculum.

Students can still learn about these subjects if they choose the corresponding course in Class 11 and Class 12. Science is not taught as a compulsory subject in India till Class 10. Only pupils who choose to study chemistry in their final two years of high school (before university) will be exposed to the periodic table.

The NCERT was chastised earlier this year for removing the notion of evolution from the Class 10 science textbook. Over 1,800 scientists and educators signed an open letter expressing their dissatisfaction with the rationalization exercise.

The government, on the other hand, dismissed all criticism saying it as propaganda.
