The updated political science textbook for class 12 is another addition to the expanding list of recent modifications and adjustments to textbooks covering contentious subjects.
Digital Desk: The National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) recently revised the political science textbook for class 12. Certain sections of the textbook have excluded references to themes including the demolition of the Babri Masjid, Ram Janambhoomi, the politics of Hindutva, the 2002 Gujarat riots, and minority concerns, as reported by Hindustan Times.
The growing list of recent revisions and alterations to textbooks covering controversial issues now includes the new political science textbook for class 12.
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) was recently informed of the NCERT's continuing rationalization of school textbooks for the 2024–25 academic year, which includes these modifications.
Notable changes have been made to the textbook "Politics in India since Independence," especially in Chapter 8: "Recent Developments in Indian Politics."
There wasn't much coverage of the Ayodhya movement, which culminated in the Babri Masjid's demolition on December 6, 1992. The original question, “What is the legacy of the Ram Janambhoomi movement and the Ayodhya demolition for the nature of political mobilisation?” has been rephrased to “What is the legacy of the Ram Janmabhoomi movement?” According to the Hindustan Times, NCERT’s rationale was to tie together the questions with internal revisions made to the chapter.
The chapter has also been modified to exclude any reference to the Babri Masjid and Hindutva politics. The Gujarat riots are also not mentioned in the caption of a news collage in Chapter 5, "Democratic Rights."
The Class 12 NCERT textbooks have undergone several revisions, and this latest one is just one among them. It was reported earlier this week that the history textbook for Class 12 students had been revised by NCERT, with a special emphasis on the rise and fall of the Harappan civilization. The chapter "Bricks, Beads, and Bones – The Harappan Civilization" in the textbook "Themes in India History Part-I" now includes three additional paragraphs from the council that discuss the ongoing DNA investigation in Rakhigarhi.
Additionally, the reprinted political science, history, and sociology textbooks for Classes 11 and 12 lost portions about historical events, the RSS, Mahatma Gandhi, and other notable personalities as a result of NCERT's rationalization process, which resulted in textbook reprints in 2022–2023. The alterations are a reflection of the continuous endeavors to optimize teaching materials and guarantee their applicability in modern settings.
