Digital Desk: The Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption, Assam on Sunday apprehended a government employee in the Nagaon district on suspicion of bribery charges.

The Anti-Corruption office received a complaint alleging that Sewali Chakravorty, the Block Development Officer (BDO) of the Binakandi Development Block in the Hojai district, had demanded a bribe of Rs. 2 lakh from the complainant to release payments for work that the complainant's brother had completed.

The complainant asked the Directorate to take the required legal action against Chakravorty since he was unwilling to pay the bribe.

In context with it, a team from the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption set up a trap on Sunday, and Sewali Chakravorty was caught red-handed in front of independent witnesses in her car at Niz Kathiatoli in the Nagaon district, as soon as she accepted Rs. 10,000 as part of the demanded bribe.

In front of independent witnesses, the tainted bribe money was recovered from her possession and has been seized accordingly.

The Directorate team arrested Chakravorty after finding sufficient evidence against her.

In this regard, a case has been registered under Section 7(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) at the ACB Police Station on October 15, 2023, under ACB P.S. Case No. 83/2023. The required legal follow-up is also underway.

Taking to X, the Directorate of Vigilance & Anti-Corruption wrote, “Today @DIR_VAC_ASSAM trapped red-handed Sewali Chakravorty, BDO of Binakandi Block, Dist. Hojai, after she accepted Rs.10000/- as a bribe in her car on the N H at Niz Kathiatoli, Dist. Nagaon for releasing payments against works completed.”
