Guwahati: On World Elephant Day, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma informed that Assam holds the second-highest position in the number of elephants in the country.

On the occasion, CM Sarma tweeted, “Assam has the second-highest number of elephants in India. The gentle giant also holds a great historical significance for our State. On #WorldElephantDay, let us resolve to protect this majestic animal as well as its habitat.”

In another tweet, he wrote, “Always awed by the grace of the Gentle Giant! Truly a sight to behold from the plains of Kaziranga. #WorldElephantDay”

The World Elephant Day, first initiated on August 12, 2012, by Thailand-based Elephant Reintroduction Foundation and Canadian filmmaker Patricia Sims is observed across the world to spread awareness on the protection of the Jumbos.

Notably, in the IUCN list, African elephants are listed as Vulnerable and Asian elephants as Endangered, which stands as one of the great concerns for the world.
