Digital Desk: The Calcutta High Court has directed the West Bengal Police's Special Investigation Team to turn over the Birbhum violence case, which resulted in the deaths of eight people, including two children, to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). According to the Court, evidence in the case and the importance of the incident suggest that state police cannot investigate the incident. Reportedly, within a week, the CBI will submit a status report to the court and the next hearing is scheduled for April 7. On March 22, eight people were killed after their houses were set on fire in West Bengal's Birbhum. Reportedly, the accident took place following the death of a TMC leader. As per police reports, three women and two children were among those who died. Lily Khatoon and Qazi Sajidur, a newlywed couple, were among those killed. According to the autopsy report, the victims were thrashed before being burned alive. The incident prompted residents to leave the Bogtui village in Rampurhat, where the violence occurred. The Bengal government formed an SIT, and at least 20 people were arrested. Mamata Banerjee, the state's chief minister, has announced a Rs 5 lakh compensation package for the victims' families. Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court ordered the state to install CCTV cameras in the presence of the district judge, as well as 24 hour CCTV surveillance of the incident spot. It also ordered a forensic team from Delhi to collect evidence from the scene immediately for examination and instructed the state to protect witnesses.
