Shillong: The prime Chief Minister-level accord to settle inter-state border disputes between Assam and Meghalaya was detained on Friday with both parties choosing to eliminate the conflicts in the 12 adjoining areas in a phased manner.
Following the first confrontation with his Meghalaya correlative Conrad K. Sangma, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told that the following CM-level meeting would be held in Guwahati on August 6, and if required, both of them would attend all the 12 contradicted places.
"We have agreed to go beyond the status quo in resolving the border disputes between the two states. Claims and counterclaims would be discussed thoroughly and a solution towards the vexed problem would be reached as soon as possible in a phased manner," Sarma said media persons.
"It was a very fruitful discussion. We came to a common understanding and we are firm and committed to resolving the border disputes," the Assam Chief Minister stated, computing that given the conflicting claims, there would be also reviews and discussions so that a constant resolution can be transferred.
In response Meghalaya Chief Minister Sangma, while acknowledging his Assam equivalent for his talk, stated that since it is a long-pending problem, it would take some added time as well as discussions to strike a friendly and acceptable resolution that is friendly to both the states.
Terming Friday's assemblage as ‘historic', Sangma stated that the inter-state border problems would be brought up on preference, as both the states are obliged to fix the long-pending matters.
The Meghalaya Chief Minister stated that delay in solving the issues has led to difficulties in the inter-state border areas, and there have several cases of confusion as well.
As per sources of Assam police, since last years' October, various inter-state border skirmishes have occurred along the 164.6 km Assam-Mizoram border.
