Digital Desk: Nandan Nilekani, co-founder of Infosys, announced a massive Rs 315 crore donation to IIT-Bombay on Tuesday, the institute that shaped his formative years and lay the groundwork for his life's journey.

Nandan Nilekanim is an alumnus of the Institute, reportedly the reason behind giving the donations to commemorate his 50-year relationship with the globally famous and reputed institute.

"IIT-Bombay has been a cornerstone in my life, shaping my formative years and laying the foundation for my journey," Nilekani said in a statement after contributing one of the institute's largest contributions.

Nilekani graduated from IIT-Bombay in 1973. He acquired a Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering here before co-founding Infosys, the country's first IT behemoth, with Narayan Murthy. From 2011 to 2015, he also sat on the board of governors of ITT-Bombay.

"This donation is more than just a financial contribution; it is a tribute to a place that has given me so much, and it is a commitment to the students who will shape our world tomorrow," Nilekani concluded.

IIT-Bombay disclosed its future objectives, stating that it would require more than $500 million (about Rs 4,106 crore) in funding over the next few years to promote world-class facilities and support research in cutting-edge engineering and technology.

Nilekani's contribution will act as an 'anchor investment' for the institute, inspiring other alumni to contribute similarly.

Notably, the Infosys co-founder, Nilekani earlier contributed Rs 85 crore, bringing the total donation to Rs 400 crore to the institute.
