Following Gaikwad's unavailability, all eyes now turn to MS Dhoni. Gaikwad was injured when he was hit by a ball from Jofra Archer.

In an official statement, CSK said that 43-year-old Dhoni, who led CSK to five IPL titles, will be back in the leadership role from Friday in Chennai. Gaikwad ruled out from the IPL 2025 due to a hairline fracture of the elbow, it added.

Dhoni handed over the captaincy to Gaikwad at the beginning of the IPL 2024. The wicket-keeper batsman will captain the team for the first time since he led the team to victory in the final of IPL 2023 against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
