Initial reports indicate that the earthquake struck in the Doda area of Jammu and Kashmir at a depth of 30 km, 18 kilometres away from the village of Gandoh Bhalessa.

Jammu and Kashmir saw severe tremors. Other areas of north India felt the shaking, including the capital city of Delhi and its surrounding regions.
