Since 1991, Manipur has maintained its dry state status through the Manipur Liquor Prohibition Act...

Digital Desk: In a pivotal move on December 4, the Manipur cabinet overturned a longstanding ban on liquor, amidst ongoing ethnic tensions and an anti-drug and alcohol abuse campaign.

This decision follows a partial lifting of prohibition over a year ago, aimed at boosting the economy and curbing health risks linked to counterfeit alcohol.

Since 1991, Manipur has maintained its dry state status through the 'Manipur Liquor Prohibition Act.'

However, the recent cabinet approval signifies a comprehensive shift, allowing the manufacture, sale, and consumption of alcohol.

A detailed gazette notification on December 6 outlined regulations for this legalization, building on the partial lifting in September of the previous year, which permitted alcohol sales at district headquarters, and select hotels, and allowed the export of locally brewed country liquor.

This policy change reflects a dynamic response to economic needs and health concerns in the region.
