Digital Desk: In a major development towards ensuring peace and public safety in Manipur, more than 4,100 looted firearms were surrendered to the authorities till Saturday. The surrendered firearms were mostly looted from armouries since the beginning of ethnic violence in the northeastern state.
The significant initiative started on May 31, 2023, when then Chief Minister N Biren Singh appealed to the public to return those stolen arms and ammunition from arm depots. He also issued a warning to take strict legal action if found weapons in possession.
People in Manipur responded to his appeal and returned 3,422 firearms till the date of his resignation as Chief Minister on February 9, 2025.
Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla restated the appeal on February 20, 2025, requesting people to surrender the arms and ammunition they possessed. After his appeal, around 700 additional firearms were surrendered by the Arambai Tenggol on February 27.
Authorities have informed that around 6,020 firearms were looted during the peak of ethnic violence in Manipur.
