Ramana made the remarks during a hearing on two separate appeals filed by the Chhattisgarh government and an activist.

Digital Desk: The Chief Justice of India, NV Ramana, stated on Friday that there is a new and distressing trend of governments maligning judges if court decisions are not to their individual preferences. Ramana made the remarks during a hearing on two separate appeals filed by the Chhattisgarh government and an activist.

An SC bench, including Justice Krishna Murari and Justice Hima Kohli, was irritated by some allegations made against the judiciary in the case that challenged the Chhattisgarh high court's decision to dismiss an FIR filed against a former IAS officer for allegedly acquiring wealth beyond known sources of income.

"It's fine to fight in whatever way you want. However, do not attempt to smear the courts. I'm also keeping an eye on this court; it's a new trend," the CJI said.

Senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi, representing the state government in one of the two appeals, stated that he is not pressing "that point at all."

"No, we keep an eye on it every day.  You are a senior lawyer, and you have seen more of this than the rest of us. It's a new fad. The government has begun to demonize judges. It's unfortunate," said the CJI.

Meanwhile, the Chhattisgarh high court dismissed the FIR, stating that the case was based on probabilities and that any person cannot be prosecuted based on probability." It also claimed that the government failed to file documents to back up its claims.

Reportedly, the hearing was adjourned by the court, and the case will be heard again on April 18.
