  Digital Desk: On the eve of India's 73rd Republic Day, General Bipin Rawat, the country's first Chief of Defence Staff, vaccine makers Krishna Ella, Suchitra Ella, Cyrus Poonawalla, opposition politicians Ghulam Nabi Azad, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, and Indian-origin Silicon Valley titans Satya Nadella and Sundar Pichai were named for the country's top civilian awards. Along with former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh, General Rawat has been awarded India's second-highest civilian award, the Padma Vibhushan. Former Congress Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad of Jammu and Kashmir and former Communist Party of India (Marxist) Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee of West Bengal have been chosen for the third-highest honour, the Padma Bhushan. Bharat Biotech's Krishna Ella and Suchitra Ella and the Serum Institute of India's Cyrus Poonawala will be awarded the Padma Bhushan for their contributions to India's response to covid-19 with the Covaxin and Covishield vaccines. Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, and Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, were also honoured with the Padma Bhushan. Along with Jamia Millia Islamia University Vice-Chancellor Najma Akhtar, singer Sonu Nigam and Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra have been given the Padma Shri, India's fourth-highest honour.
