Panaji: The former Deputy Chief Minister of Goa and the former Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly, Dayanand Narvekar has joined the Aam Admi Party on Wednesday.

Narvekar, who is a former leader of the Congres party from the state of Goa served as the Speaker of the state assembly from 1985-89. During the Congress led alliance government in the mid 2000s he also acted as the Deputy Chief Minister of the state led by Chief Minister Digambar Kamat.

This new political step of Narvekar comes at a crucial time when the political parties within the state are preparing for the upcoming assembly elections.

Upon joining the party, Narvekar in a statement to the media said that AAP has done exemplary work for the development of the National Capital. He also added that in Goa too AAP has a very good structure in place which motivated him to join the party.

However, sources say that some party members of the AAP are unhappy with the decision to induct Narvekar due to his controversial past as the Deputy CM of Goa. An office bearer of AAP has said that the party is considering a strong protest against Narvekar’s induction.

Apart from being a political leader, Narvekar was also the head of the Goa Cricket Association. During this he was also arrested in 2001 in relation to a scam involving fake tickets for a one-day international match between India and Australia in Goa.
This has led to an internal conflict within the Aaam Admi Party.
