Hyderabad: In a shocking incident, a body of a 93-year-old man was kept in a fridge by his 23-year-old grandson as he did not have money to perform his last rites.

Police came to search the house after the neighbors complained of a foul smell coming from the house, after which the police found out to decomposed body in the fridge.

The victim was retired and was staying with his grandson. Both were surviving by the old man’s pension.

"The man told police that his grandfather was bedridden and died of ill health recently. After the death, he had initially wrapped the body with a bedsheet and later kept the body in the fridge. He told police he did this as he was unable to perform the last rites due to no money with him," a police official said.

Nikhil told the police that his grandfather died three days ago and that the body was kept in the fridge since then.

Police are further trying to find out if Nikhil hid the body to make sure that the pension of his grandfather did not stop.

A case of death under suspicious circumstances has been registered. The body has been sent for post-mortem.
