The party announced Stalin was elected unopposed to the top party office at the newly formed general council meeting.

Digital Desk: M K Stalin, a DMK member and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, was unanimously elected as party president during the party's general council meeting on Sunday in Chennai. 

The DMK announced Mr Stalin was elected unopposed to the highest party post in the newly formed general council, which met here. 

Duraimurugan and T R Baalu, both party stalwarts, were unanimously elected as general secretary and treasurer, respectively.

All three of the current leaders have been re-elected to their positions. 

Party members gave the Chief Minister a rousing welcome when he arrived at the location of the general council meeting today. 

Following votes for party positions at various levels throughout the state, the DMK's 15th organisational polls saw the election of the party president, general secretary, and treasurer. 

The 69-year-old top official, who is the younger son of late party founder M Karunanidhi, has held several positions inside the organisation, including those of DMK treasurer and youth wing secretary. 

In 2018, Mr Stalin was unanimously chosen to lead the party when Mr Karunanidhi passed away. The DMK's second president is Mr Stalin.

Mr Karunanidhi became the DMK's first president in 1969, the first time the position of president was formed in the party. C N Annadurai, a Dravidian movement icon and DMK founder, was the party's general secretary until he died in 1969. The DMK was established in 1949.
