Washington: The United States stated that the new Taliban regime will not be granted any access to the Afghan Central Bank reserves. This was announced by the US Deputy Treasury Secretary Wally Adeyemo on Thursday.
He said that “no situation where the Taliban, who regained power in Afghanistan in August, would be allowed access to the Central Bank reserves”.
Adeyemo, in a statement to the Senate Banking Committee also said that the US believes that it is essential to continue with the sanctions against the Taliban government. However, at the same time, the US is also finding ways to carry on with their legitimate humanitarian assistance for Afghan citizens.
“Our goal is to make sure that we are implementing our sanctions regime against the Taliban and the Haqqani network, but at the same time allowing for the permissible flow of humanitarian assistance into the country,” Adeyemo said.
He also said that the US Treasury Department is making every effort to facilitate aids to different humanitarian groups. However, he added that it would not be successful without the help and support of the Taliban government.
Following the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, the country moved into an economic and humanitarian crisis. Due to this the Taliban government has been seeking assistance from other countries.
Earlier, the Taliban had also demanded the US to remove a block on over USD 9 billion Afghan Central Bank reserves held outside the country.
