The Heligan website stated that Queen Elizabeth II received the second pineapple ever grown in the Victorian greenhouse as a gift...

Digital Desk: Pineapple is high in vitamin C, antioxidants, and minerals such as manganese and potassium. It is a super fruit that is very good for your health, especially during the winter months. But did you know that there is a variety that's a bit costly to afford? The Heligan pineapple, named after the garden where they are cultivated in England's Cornwall, costs around 1,000 pounds sterling (Rs 1 lakh) each, taking into account the hours of labour that goes into growing them, according to a BBC report. It takes around two to three years for a crop to be ready.

The high-profile fruit was brought to Britain in 1819, claims a site dedicated to it. Soon, horticulturists realized that the country's environment is unsuitable for pineapple growth. So they developed a trick, they developed innovative wooden pit-shaped containers and added a fresh supply of decomposing manure to nourish them, as well as a backup heater. The heat warms the air that enters the pits through vents in the wall.

"Pineapples are a very labour-intensive fruit to grow. With the man hours it has required to look after the pineapple, shipping costs of manure, maintenance of the pineapple pits and other little bits and bobs, each pineapple would certainly cost us in excess of 1,000 pounds," a Heligan spokesperson told the BBC.

"Now that we've acquired the proper Victorian procedures. It's a truly fulfilling process for both gardeners and visitors alike," the spokesperson further stated.

The Heligan website stated that Queen Elizabeth II received the second pineapple ever grown in the Victorian greenhouse as a gift.

It further said that these pineapples are an eclectic mix of plants given to Heligan by Kew Gardens and rare individuals acquired from the Caribbean.

According to garden officials, if the fruit is auctioned, each pineapple might earn up to Rs.10 lakh.
