Digital Desk: Superstar Rajinikanth, fondly known as Thalaivar by his fans, is celebrating his 71st birthday today, December 12. Social media is flooded with birthday wishes from fans and well-wishers on the special day.
Wishing the reigning superstar of Indian cinema, his son-in-law and actor Dhanush tweeted, “Happy birthday my thalaiva !! The one and only SUPERSTAR RAJINIKANTH sir .. love you so much (sic),” with several heart emojis.
While, his friend and Malayalam superstar Mammootty shared a photo from their film, Thalapathy, to wish him. He wrote, “Wishing you a very happy birthday dear @rajinikanth. Stay healthy and blessed as always. #HBDSuperstarRajinikanth (sic)."

Early Life
Rajinikanth was born as Shivaji Rao Gaekwad in a Marathi family in Karnataka. His ancestors are from the village of NachiKuppam in Krishnagiri district, Tamil Nadu. He was the fourth child of his parents, Jijabai and Ramojirao Gaekwad, a police constable.
He lost his mother at the age of eight. He did his schooling at the Acharya Paathshala in Basavanagudi, Bangalore, then at the Vivekananda Balaka Sangha.
Career
Soon after completing his education, Rajinikantper performed several odd jobs, including coolie, before getting a job in the Bangalore Transport Service (BTS) as a bus conductor where Director K Balachander spotted him during his Bangalore trip and offered him a chance in his films. Following it, Sivaji Rao transformed himself as Rajinikanth and debuted with the film ‘Apoorva Raagangal’ (1975). He was cast in a small role as the ex-husband of the female lead played by Srividya.
The film received critical acclaim and won three National Film Awards, including the Best Tamil Feature Award at the 23rd National Film Awards in 1976.
Rajinikanth was open to different roles at the start, and he also played negative roles in South Indian movies. Afterward, the style he carried in his acting transformed him to do hero roles, later developed himself into a leading actor in Tamil Cinema.
After making a successful career in the South Indian film industry and winning the hearts of south fans, the Thalaivar was able to impress the population of the Hindi film industry through his various roles. Rajinikanth shared a screen with Bollywood actors like Amitabh Bachchan, after which he emerged as a favorite star amongst the cinephiles.
The constant success of Rajinikanth’s film continued to hit the audience with ease; it made him achieve several box office records both as a Tamil and Indian actor.
Even he continues his winning streak in his 70s and his ‘Annaatthe’ grossed great numbers at the box office. Moreover, the actor’s immense contribution to Indian cinema earned him the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke award.
Political Career
Rajinikanth announced entry into politics on December 31, 2017, and confirmed to contest in the 2021 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections. However, on July 12, 2021, he dissolved his party ‘Rajini Makkal Mandram’ (RMM) and said he had no future plans to enter into politics.
Personal Life
Rajinikanth married Latha Rangachari, on February 26, 1981. In Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh. The couple has two daughters named Aishwarya Rajinikanth and Soundarya Rajinikanth.
Aishwarya married actor Dhanush on November 18, 2004, and they have two sons, Yathra and Linga. His younger daughter, Soundarya, works in the Tamil film industry as a director, producer and graphic designer. She married industrialist Ashwin Ramkumar on September 3, 2010, and has a son Ved Krishna.
