Digital Desk: The Kerala Story, a controversial film starring Adah Sharma, was cancelled in numerous districts across Kerala on its release day amid backlash.
Two previously scheduled shows in Kochi have been cancelled. Kochi's Lulu Mall and Centre Square Mall theatre owners have made the decision to boycott the film. Similarly, theatres in the districts of Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Kannur, and Wayanad have decided not to screen the film.
This comes a day after the Supreme Court refused to hear a plea for the third time challenging the CBFC certificate granted to the controversial film 'The Kerala Story' stating that courts must be very careful when halting film screenings.
The Supreme Court noted that producers had put money in Sudipto Sen's film, and actors had dedicated their time, and it was up to the market to judge whether or not the picture was up to the mark.
The film, which is based on the purported radicalization and conversion of young Hindu women to Islam in Kerala before they were inducted into the terrorist organization Islamic State (IS), is released on May 5.
The request for a stay on its release was made for the first time on May 2. The Supreme Court denied the petition, calling it "the worst kind of hate speech" and "audio-visual propaganda."
