Digital Desk: On Saturday, the 22nd edition of the IIFA Weekend and Awards saw actors Vicky Kaushal and Kriti Sanon win home acting honors for their roles in the military drama "Shershaah," starring Sidharth Malhotra.
The three-day celebration culminated at the Etihad Arena, part of the Yas Bay Waterfront on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. It honored the best Hindi films released in the previous two years.
'Shershaah,' produced by Karan Johar, won the best film and best director for Vishnuvaradhan.
Based on the biography of Kargil war hero Captain Vikram Batra, the film also won accolades in the music category, with Jubin Nautiyal and Asees Kaur winning best male and female singer for Raataan Lambiyan, respectively.
"Atrangi Re" by AR Rahman and "Shershaah" by Tanishk Bagchi, Jasleen Royal, Javed-Mohsin, Vikram Montrose, B Praak, and Jaani are tied for best music direction.
Anurag Basu received the award for the best original script for his critically praised 2020 release "Ludo," dedicating the win to the film's editor Ajay Sharma, who died last year from COVID.
Kabir Khan and Sanjay Puran Singh Chauhan won the award for best-adapted narrative for their film "83," which is based on India's 1983 cricket world cup victory.
Vicky was named best actor for portraying freedom fighter Udham Singh in "Sardar Udham." Last year, the Shoojit Sircar-directed film was launched on Prime Video to critical acclaim.
In his acceptance speech, Vicky praised his family, actor wife Katrina Kaif, Sircar, and producer Ronnie Lahiri. The actor also dedicated his first Best Actor prize to the late Irrfan Khan, who was the original choice for the role.
"I'd like to thank everyone involved in the film; it's because of them that I'm here." It's in honor of all the courageous souls who have given their lives to ensure India's independence.
"This is my first best actor award, and I'd like to dedicate it to an actor who I've always liked and respected and who we lost far too soon?" "The late darling Irrfan Sahab, the original option to play Sardar Udham," the 34-year-old actor stated.
For her performance in "Mimi," actress Kriti Sanon won the prize for best actor.
Other acting awards went to the Laxman Utekar-directed comedy-drama, including Sai Tamhankar's, for outstanding performance in a supporting part.
For "Ludo," Pankaj Tripathi won the prize for best-supporting actor.
Fans greeted the actor with loud acclaim when he arrived to accept the prize, with others cheering him on by calling him Kaleen Bhaiya, the favorite fan character from "Mirzapur."
The song "Lehre Do" from Kabir Khan's "83" won Kausar Munir the award for best lyrics.
Ahan Shetty won the prize for best debut male for the film "Tadap." Suniel Shetty, his actor father, presented him with the award. For her film "Bunty Aur Babli 2," actor Sharvari Wagh won the best debut award.

Actor Shahid Kapoor paid a special tribute to music composer and vocalist Bappi Lahiri towards the end of the event. "Yaad aa raha hai tera Pyaar," "Tamma Tamma," "Raat Baaki," and "I am a disco dancer" were among Lahiri's chartbusters.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Tamannaah Bhatia, Lara Dutta, Bobby Deol, Nargis Fakhri, Urvashi Rautela, producer Boney Kapoor, and Ramesh Taurani were among those in attendance.
