Thalassemia refers to a blood condition where the body cannot produce enough haemoglobin. This condition causes the body to lose blood cells and cause them to become weaker. 

Thalassemia can be divided into two types, alpha and beta. This day is observed around the globe to honour the contributions of scientists, physicians, and medical personnel to improving the lives of people affected by Thalassemia.

Thalassemia International Federation (TIF) was established on May 8th 1994, as International Thalassemia Day.

Panos Englezos was the founder and president of TIF. He created the day in loving memory of George, his son, and all the thalassemia patients who had fought the disease.

The theme of World Thalassemia Day 2022

The World Thalassemia Day theme this year is "Be Aware.Share.Care": Working together with the global community to improve thalassemia awareness.

Importance of World Thalassemia Day 2022

This day is a call to action, promoting awareness and raising funds for the disease.

This genetic blood disorder can be passed from one parent to the next. This disease causes a reduction in red blood cells and haemoglobin levels.

This day should be celebrated by spreading awareness to the youth about the importance of seeking medical help before having children.
