Digital Desk: A diplomat in Saudi Arabia stated on Wednesday that 68 Indian nationals died during the Hajj pilgrimage this year marked by searing heat, bringing the overall tally to more than 600.
A diplomat, speaking anonymously to AFP, disclosed, "We have confirmed around 68 dead… Some are because of natural causes and we had many old-age pilgrims. And some are due to the weather conditions, that’s what we assume." This statement underscores the diverse factors contributing to the fatalities, including age-related health issues and the severe weather conditions prevailing during the pilgrimage.
Earlier reports indicated that 550 deaths had been recorded, including significant numbers from Egypt and Jordan, primarily attributed to heat-related causes. The toll has since risen to 645, as confirmed by various countries such as Indonesia, Iran, Senegal, Tunisia, and Iraq's Kurdistan region, though specifics on the causes remain varied and in some cases unspecified.
Saudi Arabia, the host of the hajj, has reported over 2,700 cases of "heat exhaustion" in recent days, highlighting the strenuous conditions faced by pilgrims during the rituals.
The diplomat acknowledged that while there are also reports of missing Indian pilgrims, it's a recurring occurrence during the annual pilgrimage. "This happens every year… We can’t say that it is abnormally high this year," the diplomat added, noting the similarity in numbers to previous years.
The hajj has consistently fallen during the sweltering Saudi summer in recent years, with temperatures steadily rising according to a Saudi study. This climatic challenge adds an additional layer of difficulty for pilgrims undertaking the physically demanding rituals.
As the hajj continues and more details emerge, authorities and communities are grappling with the aftermath of this year's pilgrimage, focusing on providing support to affected families and ensuring the well-being of all participants.
