At his restaurant Shish Mahal in the 1970s, Ahmed Aslam Ali created a sauce from a can of tomato soup to create the famous curry.
In a 2009 interview with AFP, Ali stated that a customer's complaint that his chicken tikka was too dry inspired him to develop the Chicken Tikka Masala recipe.

"This restaurant is credited with inventing Chicken Tikka Masala. We used to serve chicken tikka, and one day a customer requested more sauce because it was a little dry "explained he.

Later on, Chicken Tikka Masala became popular as one of the most-ordered dishes in British restaurants.
