Els Enfarinats’ festival : 200-year-old food fight in Spain

Digital Desk: The annual festival of Els Enfarinats takes place in the town of Ibi in Alicante, Spain on December 28, as part of celebrations related to the Day of Innocents. Els enfarinats comes from the Valencian word for "breading" and roughly translates to "the breaded ones" or "the floured ones. At 9 a.m., the men gather in the church square and make the same demand every year: they want a "New Justice. "

During this 200-year-old traditional festival, participants are known as Els Enfarinats (those covered in flour) dress in military clothes and stage a mock coup d'etat as they battle using flour, eggs and firecrackers outside the city town hall. People dressed in mock military garb take part in the "Els Enfarinats" battle in the southeastern Spanish town of Ibi. The participants' faces are colorfully painted. They try to gain power for one day. Someone from their ranks is appointed mayor, and absurd "laws" are passed that everyone has to abide by.

People shoot off fireworks during the event.

This festival also commemorates the day when, according to the Bible, King Herod ordered the children in Bethlehem to be killed – in the hope of catching Jesus, whom he considered a competitor. The celebration ends with a dance in the evening – and with a lot of cleaning!
