Digital Desk: On Tuesday, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck northern Turkey, only hours after three catastrophic earthquakes devastated Turkey and Syria on Monday, killing over 4,000 people.
As stated by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck the central Turkey region.
According to EMSC, the quake occurred at a depth of 2 kilometres. Many countries are providing supplies and aid personnel, including India.
The death toll is expected to rise as rescue workers dig through the junk. The initial quake's epicentre occurred near Nurdagi in Gaziantep province, close to the Syrian border. The other two quakes occurred in the neighbouring province of Kahramanmaraş.
Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has declared seven days of national mourning, during which Turkish flags will be flown at half-staff across the country and at diplomatic posts around the world.
Early this morning, NDRF Search and Rescue Teams, particularly trained dog squads, medical supplies, drilling machinery, and other equipment from India went to Turkey. This came just hours after Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the earthquake-ravaged country.
Following the fatal earthquakes that struck Turkey on Monday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared seven days of national mourning. Turkish flags will be flown at half-staff across the country and at diplomatic missions around the world.
Regarding the Earthquake damage, US President Joe Biden pledged US help to NATO ally Turkey during a phone discussion with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. 'He emphasised the United States' willingness to provide any essential assistance to our NATO member Turkey in response to this tragedy,' the White House said in a statement following Biden's phone talk with Erdogan.
'President Biden offered sympathies on behalf of the American people to those injured or who lost loved ones in the earthquakes,' the statement stated.
After the three major earthquakes, the region suffered around 100 aftershocks, according to seismologists.
Relief workers are pouring in from all over the world to help in Turkey and Syria. Among them are India, the EU, the United Kingdom, Russia, the United States, Jordan, Mexico, Japan, and South Korea.
