Digital Desk: Thousands of rockets fired by the Islamist group Hamas hit Israel on Saturday, forcing the country to declare a state of war. The increase in violence comes after months of rising bloodshed in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with the number of casualties in the West Bank reaching levels not seen in years.
In an unprecedented move, militants have penetrated southern towns using motorcycles, SUVs, and paragliders. Social media videos depict shots being fired at residents in southern Israeli communities.
In one such video, which was recorded by a Sderot resident, Hamas terrorists can be seen firing at passing civilian cars. A resident can be seen quickly ducking for cover as a gunman stares in his general direction in the footage that was taken from his patio.
International human rights lawyer Arsen Ostrovsky posted the video on X.
The bodies of several Israeli troops were also seen being dragged into the streets by militants in other social media videos, which were allegedly from Gaza.
The conflict broke out a day after Gaza's ruling party, Hamas, declared that "people had to draw a line to end the occupation" and claimed that Israel was still committing crimes on Palestinian territory, particularly at Jerusalem's historic Al-Aqsa compound.
Mohamed Deif, a militant leader for Hamas, declared in a pre-recorded speech, "We have resolved to put a stop to all of this, with the help of God, so that the enemy learns that the period of irresponsible behavior without consequence is over. The first strike has used more than 5,000 missiles and shells in the first 20 minutes as we declare Operation Al-Aqsa Flood."
